The American filmmaker, whose credits include Batman, Edward Scissorhands and Charlie And The Choclate Factory, was a member of the Cannes jury in 1997 and on the short film panel in 2006. His Johnny Depp-led Ed Wood premiered at the prestigious festival in 1995.
"After spending my early life watching triple features and 48-hour horror movie marathons, I'm finally ready for this," Burton said. "When you think of Cannes you think of world cinema. And as films have always been like dreams to me, this is a dream come true."
The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 12-23 this year. Burton releases his latest movie Alice In Wonderland on March 5.
