Work on the project is currently under way at Lucas's Skywalker Ranch in California. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the story is said to centre around tiny mythological creatures.
Lucas hatched the idea for the untitled animation and enlisted The Spiderwick Chronicle writer David Berenbaum to pen the script. TMNT director Kevin Munroe has signed up to helm the project, which will pull in music from a variety of different sources.
Lucas recently admitted that he is "getting closer" to making 3D versions of his six Star Wars movies.
