The Office creator told DS that he is also using American movies such as Saturday Night Fever and Rebel Without A Cause as points of reference.
"It's Saturday Night Fever in the sense that it's about blue collar guys living for today. It's not about dancing, as such," he said. "We've left the veil of irony behind that we had for The Office and Extras. It's a bit of Rebel Without A Cause, there's one guy in it who's sort of a James Dean-type figure.
"British movies, I suppose we're trying to do a new wave of New Wave. A British film it reminds me of is probably something like Saturday Night And Sunday Morning. Stick all that in the pot, mix it up and you get Cemetery Junction."
Based on Alan Sillitoe's classic novel, Saturday Night And Sunday Morning centres on a hard-drinking Nottingham factory worker who juggles relationships with two women.
The Invention Of Lying is out on DVD and Blu-ray today, while Cemetery Junction bows in UK cinemas on April 17.
