Salinger died on Wednesday at his home in New Hampshire.
The two-hour documentary, titled Salinger, features interviews with stars like Edward Norton, John Cusack, Danny DeVito, Philip Seymour Hoffman and writers Gore Vidal and Tom Wolfe, says Deadline Hollywood.
Salerno, who is working on the script for Fantastic Voyage for James Cameron, financed the film out of his own pocket.
He collaborated with author David Shields on a 700-page companion book for the picture.
Salerno apparently hopes to premiere the film at the Cannes Film Festival and land a distribution deal.
