Kathryn Bigelow has become the first woman to win the Director's Guild.

Bigelow, who won the award for The Hurt Locker, beat her ex-husband James Cameron to the accolade.

Other nominees for the prize included Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds, Jason Reitman for Up In The Air and Lee Daniels for Precious.

According to USA Today, on receiving the award Bigelow said: "Just to be in the room with all of you is an unimaginable honour. We all felt a deep responsibility to tell this story as honestly as possible, given the courage of our troops overseas. This is the most incredible moment of my life. And with that, I'll disappear."

The Hurt Locker recently won the top prize at the Producers Guild of America awards and has been nominated for eight BAFTAs.

It is now expected to be in the running for the Oscars when the nominations are announced on February 2.
