The X-Men Origins: Wolverine star will head to China later this month to film the picture at the Hengdian Studio outside Shanghai, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Chinese media outlets have reported that Jackman has been cast as the male lead. However, his publicist said: "At this point in time, he is doing an unbilled cameo."
Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi recently left the project, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts.
The film is based on a novel by Lisa See. The plot centres on the lifelong relationship between two friends in 19th century China who are imprisoned by rigid codes of conduct for women.
