Crowe to mentor Beyoncé in 'A Star Is Born'

According to the Los Angeles Times, Crowe is eager to take on the role of an alcoholic musician who mentors and romances an up-and-coming starlet. The part has previously attracted interest from Robert Downey Jr and Sean Penn.
Nick Cassavettes (The Notebook) is directing the musical's latest incarnation for Warner Bros, who will release the movie in 2012.
The first Star Is Born opened in 1937 and was reworked for the screen twice. Judy Garland and James Mason fronted the 1957 version, while Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson played the romancing duo in the 1976 update.
