The film is based on the Western TV show, which started as a radio serial in 1952 before leaping to the small screen in 1955 for a 20-year stint on CBS. It was the longest-running primetime show until being eclipsed by The Simpsons last year.
Pitt is believed to be the first choice for Dillon, a peacekeeper in the old west, following his role in similarly-themed period drama The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.
Gregory Poirier has written the script for Gunsmoke, which CBS Films is looking to recruit a leading man and director for soon.
