Brand revealed in 2008 that he is hoping to produce a new version of the 1981 comedy, which starred Dudley Moore as a playboy facing a choice between money and love.
The Daily Star claims that Streep has expressed an interest in the project and is in talks for the role of the butler Hobson.
"When I met Russell recently, he said he was remaking Arthur with himself in the lead," a source said. "Apparently they're working on the script and adapting stuff to bring it up to date.
"He wants a woman to play Hobson, saying it would make the dynamics really interesting."
Peter Baynham, who won an Oscar for his work on Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan, has been announced as the writer of the movie.
