According to E! News, Universal Pictures co-chair Donna Langley praised the Twilight star and described him as "perfect" for the role.
"In the past two years, Taylor has emerged as a real star at the global box office," she said.
"He brings the perfect balance of energy and athleticism to the role of an unlikely superhero with a fantastic superpower. We couldn't be more pleased that he has agreed to be our Stretch."
The movie, based on the popular Hasbro toy, will reportedly be filmed using 3D technology. Brian Grazer has signed up to produce the film, while Steve Oedekerk will write the screenplay.
Stretch Armstrong is scheduled to be released in the US on April 15, 2011.
