The studio recently approached Daniel Craig to fill the title role in the Jon Favreau-helmed project, after the departure of original leading man Robert Downey Jr last year.
Following reports that it has now managed to secure the Bond star's services, Universal today announced that the film is to arrive in cinemas on July 29, 2011.
Filming is expected to get under way in June, only weeks after Favreau completes work on Iron Man 2.
The film depicts the fallout that occurs after aliens invade an Old West settlement in mid-1800s Arizona. Craig is in line to play gunslinging protagonist Zeke Jackson, who rallies a resistance against the extraterrestrial invasion.
