The Notebook star has replaced Australian actor Hugh Jackman in the film, which tells the story of a stuntman.
Speaking to Empire Online, the film's writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn said: "Hopefully next is a movie with Ryan Gosling at a studio in America. It's called Drive and it's about a stuntman by day, a getaway driver by night."
Drive, which is based on the James Sallis' novel of the same name, has been stalled for production in recent years with Neil Marshall originally lined up to direct the film.
