Hasbro and Mattell have partnered to turn the Meccano toy into a film, according to Empire Online.
The major toy manufacturers approached Helix Films to produce a movie about the model construction system. The toy, known as the Erector Set in the US, was originally created by Liverpool-native Frank Hornby in 1901.
Meccano has licensed the toy set to Helix Films.
"The three partners of Helix Films all grew up playing with Erector Set toys but in different countries so our partnership with Meccano is very personal, as well as exciting," Helix co-owner Steven-Charles Jaffe told Variety. "We believe the iconic Erector brand offers generational appeal with global reach, providing a tremendous platform to create a thrilling film franchise that boys, girls and adults will all adore," Jaffe said.
Although there is no screenwriter attached to the project, Helix stated that the family adventure will be shot in 3D with a possible release date in 2011.
