The acclaimed filmmaker, whose credits include Carrie, Scarface, The Untouchables and Mission: Impossible, is believed to be one of the frontrunners to helm the next instalment in the horror series.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Brad Anderson (The Machinist) and Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) are also contenders to make the film.
Saw VI director Kevin Greutert was previously attached to the project, but was forced to drop out after Lionsgate activated a clause in his contract to bring him back for the next Saw.
Paranormal Activity 2 is scheduled to open in cinemas on October 22, putting it in direct competition with Saw VII 3D at the box office.
