According to Vulture, Universal has now decided to pull the plug on the Timur Bekmambetov-directed project rather than recast Jolie's assassin character Fox, who appeared to die at the end of 2008 blockbuster.
Instead Jolie will now lead the cast of Alfonso Cuarón's sci-fi movie Gravity. The story, similar to last year's Moon, centres on a surviving member of a space mission who is desperate to return to Earth to see her daughter.
Children Of Men director Cuarón co-wrote the Gravity script with his son Jonás, while Harry Potter's David Heyman will produce for Warner Bros.
