The Hangover star was set to play a spy who battles his best friend over a woman, played by Reese Witherspoon. Filming was originally scheduled to begin in the spring but has since been pushed back to July.
Cooper officially cited a scheduling conflict as the reason for his departure, though other sources claim that the split was due to creative concerns over the script. Several versions of the screenplay have been written during the film's decade-long development at 20th Century Fox.
Currently Role Models screenwriter Timothy Dowling is redrafting the latest version of the script, while Terminator Salvation director McG will reportedly direct.
Cooper, who will star as Templeton 'Face' Peck in the The A-Team, will begin filming The Hangover 2 this October.
