Based on Ron Rash's 2008 novel of the same name, it centres on George Pemberton and his wife Serena building a prosperous timber empire in 1929 North Carolina. The story takes a dark turn when Serena learns that she can't have children and sets out to murder her husband's illegitimate son.
Chris Kyle (K-19: The Widowmaker) has written the script for the movie, while The Road's Nick Wechsler is on board to produce, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Jolie, who recently dropped out of the Wanted sequel, had been linked to Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity but reportedly turned down the sci-fi project.
