According to a statement co-star Seth Rogen sent to MTV, McAvoy had to drop out of the project for personal reasons.
"It's incredibly unfortunate that circumstances outside of everyone's control have taken James away from the project, but, with James's blessing, we were able to have Joseph step in to take on the role of Adam," read the statement.
Gordon-Levitt will now portray a man battling cancer with the help of his best friend (Rogen). The supporting cast includes Anjelica Huston, Anna Kendrick and Philip Baker Hall. Jonathan Levine is directing.
Production on the film has already begun in Vancouver.
