The actress plays the title role in Burton's upcoming 3D adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland.
Wasikowska told Metro of the director: "He's misunderstood. There's this thing where people go, 'He's really dark'. Yet he makes a lot of children's stories.
"They might have a certain spookiness about them, but they're not necessarily dark. I see this kind of innocence in him."
Of working with Johnny Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter, she added: "He's everything you expect him to be - he's cool, he's kind and funny, and very down to earth.
"His character is itself unpredictable but you can never be sure what you'll get in a scene with Johnny. It was like an acting school in itself."
