Tim Burton has said that it's an "honour" to be heading the jury at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.

The Alice In Wonderland director was previously a member of the jury in 1997 and on the short film panel in 2006. His Johnny Depp-led Ed Wood, about the maligned Plan 9 From Outer Space filmmaker, premiered at the prestigious festival in 1995.

"It's a real honour to be there. Being in this dark green hole for a couple of years, I'm just excited to see movies," said Burton, referring to the effects-driven process of making Alice In Wonderland.

"I've been to Cannes so I know what to expect a bit, but it's a bit like Wonderland, it's got that surreal quality going on. I think the goal is to be open to things and see things, let the experience wash over you and be open to the things that you see. It's quite exciting."

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 12 to May 23 this year.
