The studio will produce the screen adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's story about a Southern white woman and her black housekeepers in the 1960s. The film's screenplay was drafted by Stockett's childhood friend Tate Taylor, who will also direct the feature.
According to DreamWorks co-president of production Holly Bario, Taylor met with Steven Spielberg last week to discuss the finished script.
“We had a good solid meeting with him last week," Bario said. "He met with Steven. He watched movies with Steven. We are in it."
The film, which is produced by Brunson Green and Percy Jackson director Chris Columbus, will begin shooting in Mississippi this summer.
