The actress insisted that she was under pressure to play the original Lewis Carroll character, even though the movie takes place after his books.
Speaking to MTV, the 20-year-old said: "There's a certain amount of pressure and a little amount of anxiety when it comes to Alice, because she's such an iconic character and so many people know her.
"Very early on, you know you are not going to please everyone. The most important thing was making the character my own."
As for portraying an older version of Alice in the film, she added: "She's 19 in our story and she's in a different stage in her life to where she is in the storybooks.
"She's experiencing different things and I think she's relatable as a teenager. A lot of people would understand where she is at and what she is dealing with."
Alice In Wonderland is currently playing in cinemas.
