The Amityville Horror entered the North American box office chart at number one this weekend.
Taking $23.3m, the thriller displaced last week's chart-topping desert adventure Sahara from the top spot, which took $13.1m this weekend bringing its total earnings to $36.4m.
In third place was Nick Hornby adaptation Fever Pitch with Sin City and Guess Who rounding out the top five.
