Guy Ritchie has attached himself to direct Warner Bros's retelling of King Arthur, reports Variety.

The director was earlier linked to the Warren Ellis-scripted Arthur project and has now committed to reteam with the Sherlock Holmes studio to helm John Hodge's (Trainspotting) script.

The movie will rework Arthurian legend to show how the sixth century British ruler defeated Saxon invaders. It will take inspiration from Thomas Mallory's Le Morte d'Arthur, a compilation of French and English tales from 1485.

Ritchie is also at work on a Holmes sequel, rumoured to be shooting this year.
