Jeff Bridges has revealed that he always wanted Maggie Gyllenhaal to play his love interest in Crazy Heart.

The 60-year-old actor, who won an Oscar last Sunday for his performance in the film, said that he "admired her acting".

"I've been following her, she's a great actress, she disappears into the role and becomes that person. She was on the top of my list of actresses that I kind of imagined in that role," he said.

Gyllenhaal appeared in Donnie Darko in 2001 before landing her breakthrough role the year after in Secretary.

Bridges later told DS: "I thought about having a more 'age appropriate' relationship, but the story didn't lend itself to that somehow. It felt better to do it this way.

"As far as how it felt doing it; I mean, I still think of myself as 25! I can't believe I'm 60 years old. I mean, come on! You know?"
