The screen adaptation, which centres around Frank Hampson's 1950s hero, will be modernised by comics writer Garth Ennis.
Richard Branson’s Virgin Comics purchased the rights to the character two years ago and Warner Bros is currently searching for a screenwriter to pen the script.
Worthington would play Dan Dare, a chief pilot on the Interplanet Space Fleet.
This would mark the first feature film adaptation of the comic, which has been dramatised previously for radio and television.
