Joaquin Phoenix will reportedly return to acting as poet Edgar Allan Poe.

Oscar winning sound designer Resul Pookutty (Slumdog Millionaire) told the Mumbai Mirror that Phoenix has been signed up to play the late romantic author of The Raven.

Speaking from New York yesterday, Pookutty said: "I couldn't be happier because I am doing a period film. It is a very special challenge because I have to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854.

"It's an adaptation of The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower and based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allan Poe which happened just months before his death. Joaquin plays Edgar Allan Poe."

In 2008, Phoenix announced his retirement from film, but he recently confirmed to Showbiz411 that he would return to the profession soon.

The now clean-shaven actor-turned-rapper reportedly said that he hoped to read some good scripts and quipped: "Why don't you write one?”
