The former Spooks star has been cast as the civil rights leader during the time he organised a historic march in Selma, Alabama in 1965, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Hugh Jackman is expected to play the town's racist sheriff, while Robert De Niro is interested in the role of state governor George Wallace. Lenny Kravitz is also on board as civil rights pioneer Andrew Young, who aids King in planning the march.
Oyelowo's movie credits include The Last King Of Scotland and the upcoming George Lucas WWII drama Red Tails.
