UPDATED: McKellen's website now claims that The Hobbit will shoot in July.

Sir Ian McKellen has revealed that filming on The Hobbit will commence in June this year.

A posting on the actor's website claimed that the two prequels will go in front of cameras in New Zealand in the coming months.

"The Hobbit, two films, start shooting in New Zealand in June. Filming will take over a year. Casting in Los Angeles, New York City and London has started. The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth," the site update said.

McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett are expected to reprise their roles from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy in The Hobbit, which centres on the adventures of a young Bilbo Baggins.

Guillermo del Toro will direct with Peter Jackson serving as producer.
