According to Vulture, the studio is trying to navigate out of Reitman's contract, which gives him and stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis the choice to veto a third Ghostbusters film if any of them don't like the script.
Sony is said to be eager for its Ghostbusters revamp, which will see the old spook catchers hand over the reins to new recruits, to follow the same path as Spider-Man, which recently hired (500) Days Of Summer's Marc Webb to direct.
Reitman's summer schedule will be taken up by filming Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman comedy Friends With Benefits, the same time that production on Ghostbusters 3 is slated to start to make its 2011 release date.
Sources have claimed that Reitman wants to direct both movies, putting the start date for the new Ghostbusters in doubt.
