Warner Bros has begun the process of securing the rights to adapt the popular manga Bleach to film, reports Variety.

50 First Dates director Peter Segal is in negotiations to helm the movie alongside Viz Media, the publishers of the English-language editions of the series.

Tite Kubo's best-selling Bleach has been published in weekly instalments since 2001.

It tells the story of Ichigo, a young man who can see ghosts and is forced to take on the role of shepherding them to the other side when a Soul Reaper he meets is injured in battle.

Bleach has already been adapted as an anime in various languages, and five live musicals in Japan.

Warner Bros is also currently working on a live-action adaptation of the legendary animated film Akira.
