The actress has said that she was drawn to the script because she believes in making good films for children.
The 32-year-old told BANG Showbiz: "I do believe it's important to make movies for kids that are great. My daughter is a little young for this film, but she loves movies and I see how much they sort of soak it all in their little brains.
"But really for me, I just wanted to play the part and I wanted to act with Emma. And I cried five or six times while reading the script."
Gyllenhaal also praised her co-star Emma Thompson, who plays the eponymous heroine.
She added: "I think that Emma is a real grown up and I think there are very few people I can say that about. And I hope that one day I can be a real grown up. It's not that she's perfect. She's just really, really committed."
