According to IESB, Smith will shoot both films back-to-back, possibly as early as 2011.
Director Roland Emmerich is expected to return to helm both pictures after wrapping his William Shakespeare thriller Anonymous.
The original Independence Day was released in 1996 and earned more than $817 million (£543 million) at cinemas worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Emmerich previously revealed that he was eager to return to the alien invasion franchise, and wanted to do a "bigger arc" with the sequels.
