According to Production Weekly, Sean Penn is in talks to play the titular surfing champion's mentor Rick "Frosty" Hesson in the project.
Moriarty was a world-class big-wave rider from Santa Cruz, California. He died on his 23rd birthday in a free-diving accident in 2001.
California surfing elder Hesson formed a friendship with Moriarty and helped him train to win a string of professional surfing titles.
Hanson’s previous films include 8 Mile, Wonder Boys, and L.A. Confidential.
