The 26-year-old - who played Craig Dean in the Channel 4 serial for six years - takes on the part of Commando Riley, a specially-trained sniper.
Based on a true story, Age of Heroes - the first of a trilogy - follows James Bond author Ian Fleming's time with elite special forces unit 30 Commando.
Speaking of his casting, Burnet exclusively told Digital Spy: "I'm ecstatic about the role and excited to be working alongside established actors and a great director in Adrian Vitoria.
"Having already spent the week training with the Royal Marines, it's most important for me to make the real-life commandos proud. They're an amazing bunch of people and the film's top priority is to make the troops proud."
He added: "I have a few other projects on the horizon, so I'm looking forward to the great year ahead."
Filming is due to take place in Norway over a four-week period.
