According to Showbiz Spy, the actor is favourite to portray the controversial Argentinean footballer, renowned for his infamous "hand of God" handball against England at the 1986 World Cup and hard-partying lifestyle.
"Maradona's story is as colourful and dramatic as any sportsman's who has ever lived and that's why he's the perfect subject for a movie," an insider revealed.
"He has had drama all through his life from growing up on the streets in Argentina to captaining and now managing his national team.
"Benicio is the logical choice to play the lead role. In fact, the whole project hinges on him being Maradona."
