The actor came to despise the owl named Bubo, a replica of the character featured in the original 1981 film, director Louis Leterrier revealed to Entertainment Weekly.
"Sam couldn't stand the owl. He wanted to destroy it. He kept threatening to drop it," Leterrier said.
He added: "He'd say, 'This is ridiculous! This is a ridiculous thing to have in the movie! You're going to ruin my career with that owl!'"
Worthington said that the owl did not "deserve" to be in the movie.
He recently claimed that actors are not at risk of being replaced by technology.
The 3D Clash of the Titans update opens today in the US.
