Edwards caused controversy earlier this year when he confessed that he had fathered a child with his former mistress Rielle Hunter.
According to the New York Daily News, Sorkin is now in negotiations to adapt The Politician, a memoir by Edwards's former aide Andrew Young.
"I've heard a lot of strong names," Young said. "I'd be honoured if Aaron Sorkin is one of them."
Sorkin worked on television shows The West Wing and Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, and has recently penned scripts for Brad Pitt's baseball drama Moneyball and a movie about Facebook, The Social Network.
His representative has not yet commented on the reports.
