International Media Films challenged Michael Lucas, the director and star of a gay film which shares the title of Fellini's 1960 film La Dolce Vita.
The organisation claimed that Lucas's film, which was a gay take on the classic, violated its copyright.
On Friday, New York federal judge John G. Koeltl ruled against the IMF's claim and stated that it had failed "to show that it has sufficient admissible evidence from which a reasonable fact finder could conclude that it was the copyright owner of the Fellini film".
.
Koeltl maintained that the Fellini movie could be considered "public domain".
Lucas won 14 prizes for La Dolce Vita at the 2007 GayVN Awards.
