Fall's story takes place in the near future when natural disasters and rising sea levels have forced people to live on the ocean floor. The protagonists - an underwater teen boy and a surface girl - join forces to uncover a government conspiracy.
Dark Life will be published in May through Scholastic, and is expected to be the first book in a series.
Zemeckis is attached to produce (and potentially direct) the movie alongside Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey, Jackie Levine, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman.
His ImageMovers company is also working on a remake of Beatles movie The Yellow Submarine with Peter Serafinowicz and Dean Lennox Kelly in the lead roles.
