Sigourney Weaver has hit out at Academy voters for not awarding her Avatar director James Cameron the 'Best Director' Oscar.

The actress, who also worked with Cameron on Aliens, has allegedly suggested that The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow only won because voters were keen to give a woman the prize for the first time.

"Jim didn't have breasts, and I think that was the reason [he lost the Oscar]," Weaver reportedly told Brazilian website Folha Online. "He should have taken home that Oscar."

Weaver added that Avatar's Oscar snub also reflected a desire to award low-budget films the top gongs instead of epics.

"In the past, Avatar would have won because they loved to hand out awards to big productions, like Ben-Hur," she said. "Today it's fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw."
