The story centres on Johnnie Shepherd, a former carnival worker with anger problems and the beautiful girl he seduces in a tavern. The late Kubrick commissioned pulp writer Jim Thompson to pen a treatment for the project in the late '50s.
The script was found several years ago and screenwriter Stephen R. Clarke completed the most recent draft in 2006. Kubrick worked with Thompson on The Killing and Paths Of Glory and planned to make Luncatics after the iconic American director completed work on Spartacus.
Johansson and Rockwell will appear together in superhero blockbuster Iron Man 2, which debuts in the UK on April 30 and the US on May 7.
