The Brüno actor is reportedly being considered to assume the titular role in the comedy, based on Danny Kaye's 1947 original.
The project has been in development since 1994, with Jim Carrey initially slated for the lead, before he eventually dropped out. Owen Wilson was then expected to take the part, with Mike Myers most recently connected to the film.
The movie is also without a director, after both Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg pulled out of proceedings.
Peter Morgan is believed to be drafting the latest script, which sees Mitty undertake a different occupation to the original film. Where he was once a bumbling writer, he will now instead be a meek store manager with frustrated dreams of becoming a hero.
