The academy will present the Avatar director with its 'Visionary Award' at the 36th annual Saturn Awards, says The Hollywood Reporter.
"James Cameron has always maintained a clear vision of his creations on screen. With Avatar, he has raised the bar by successfully creating a masterpiece beyond anything ever seen on screen," academy president Robert Holguin said.
X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner and Star Trek writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will also receive honours at the event.
Donner will be presented with the 'Producers Showcase Award', while Kurtzman and Orci will be handed the 'George Pal Memorial Award'.
The awards ceremony will take place on June 24 at The Castaway in Burbank.
