Ken Kwapis is directing the Universal project, previously titled Everybody Loves Whales, reports Deadline.
The plot centres on the release of three California grey whales which were found trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle in 1988.
The attempt to rescue the whales became a huge global event with journalists and environmentalists converging on the town of Barrow, Alaska.
The movie will also feature a love story between a Greenpeace activist (Barrymore) and a journalist (Krasinski).
