According to Entertainment Weekly, the Matrix star will play the villain in Marvel's upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America.
It is said that the movie version of the Red Skull will be an update of the classic comic book character whose real name is John Schmidt.
Weaving is also known for playing Elrond in the Lord of the Rings movies and for voicing Megatron in the two Transformers films.
Captain America, also starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan and Hayley Atwell, arrives in US cinemas on July 22, 2011.
