The In Bruges star is to take on the role played by Chris Sarandon in the original, that of a charismatic vampire who moves in next door to horror buff Charley Brewster.
Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) is already on board to portray the teen lead, while Toni Collette will play his mother.
Farrell, who recently appeared in indie films Crazy Heart and Ondine, has also agreed to star in Seth Gordon comedy Horrible Bosses.
The Irsh actor chose Fright Night and Bosses over roles in Katherine Heigl's One For The Money and Reese Witherspoon's This Means War.
