The film is based on Jack Kerouac's 1957 novel of the same name.
Dunst joins Garrett Heldund, Kristen Stewart and Sam Riley in the movie, reports Variety.
The book chronicles Kerouac's years travelling North America with Neal Cassidy. The author dubbed himself 'Sal Paradise' and Cassidy 'Dean Moriarty' in the Beat Generation classic.
Production begins in August.
