Leigh: 'Another Year is life-affirming'

The acclaimed British director, whose work includes gritty dramas such as Secrets & Lies and Vera Drake, made the remarks at the film's Cannes press conference.
He said: "I think this film is as life-affirming as Happy-Go-Luck. It does deal in a more obvious way with deeper and darker things, but then so did Happy-Go-Luck. I would hate it to be thought that this film is not life-affirming. I think it actually is, but in a more complex way than Happy-Go-Lucky."
Lee added that he attempts to "make a film each time that is different from the others and takes a different perspective", however, he conceded that French film icon Jean Renoir's theory about directors making the same film again and again may be true.
Another Year, starring Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen and Lesley Manville, follows 12 months in the life of a couple in their 60s and the ups and downs of their close friends and relatives.
