Filmmaker George A. Romero is in talks to direct a remake of 1975 horror movie Deep Red.

The original film was directed by Italian moviemaker Dario Argento. The new version will be released in 3D, according to Variety.

The 1975 picture centres on a string of grisly supernatural murders and is considered to be one of Argento's most popular films.

He and Romero collaborated on Romero's 1978 zombie movie Dawn of the Dead.

Production on the update is expected to begin this autumn in Canada.

Romero's latest film Survival of the Dead opens May 28 in US cinemas.
